Recycle a Book, Save a Tree ... or 166,600 Trees

As the restaurant industry's No. 1 food safety training and certification program, the National Restaurant Association's ServSafe has certified 4 million foodservice professionals.

That means giving a lot of exams ... which last year became an opportunity to demonstrate the Association's commitment to greening its operations. So the ServSafe team arranged for document shredding/recycling company ShredX to recycle the exam booklets.

ShredX recently gave the Association a green solutions award for those recycling efforts. The company estimates the Association saved 68.6 million gallons of water, 39.2 million kilowatts of electricity, 166,600 trees, 32,340 cubic yards of landfill space, and 9,800 metric tons of green house gas by recycling booklets last year.

Did You Know?

Spending on utilities consumes approximately 2.5 percent to 3.4 percent of total restaurant sales, depending on the type of operation.
